All workers must be protected, says Shahelmey

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Shahelmey Yahya called on all quarters to take the safety and welfare of workers seriously.

He said all workers, including the self-employed and those from online businesses, must be given employment protection as many incidents had occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We have more self-employed workers in this digital age and I understand the Social Security Organisation (Socso) has a protection scheme for the self-employed and online businesses.

"As such, we must work together to create awareness to the employers and promote to employees that a protection scheme is available at Socso," he said during the Socso 50th golden jubilee celebration at Wisma Socso near Tanjung Aru today.

In line with Malaysia becoming an ageing nation by 2030, he suggested that Socso provides social security schemes for senior citizens starting from now.

Later, Shahelmey and Sabah Socso director Dr Mohd Ali Hindia visited several beneficiaries of the Socso disability scheme for accidents and illness in Putatan.

The beneficiaries received a monthly life pension, food, diapers, wheelchairs and other necessities recommended by doctors.
