East-bound traffic expected to increase when inter-state travel resumes

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic is expected to increase to between 150,000 and 160,000 vehicles travelling to the east coast daily when the inter-state travel ban is lifted.

Kuala Lumpur – Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway (Phase 1) concessionaire ANIH Berhad said the scenario is bound to happen as those living in the Klang Valley would grab the opportunity to return to their hometowns.

Its operation and maintenance head, Ainul Hasri Shah Abu Hassan, however said it was not clear when this would happen as it was subject to the government's announcement.

"On our side, we will make preparations for the reopening of interstate travel and all 13 plaza tolls are sufficient to handle the surge in vehicles.

"We expect the situation to be better this round as the Central Spine Road from Bentong to Gua Musang is scheduled to start operations tomorrow," he told BH today.

Ainul Hasri Shah said ANIH Berhad also encouraged those who plan to make their trips to the east coast to reload their Touch n Go cards and eWallets.

"All the toll plazas under ANIH Berhad support Touch n Go, Smart Tag and Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, and road users can also top-up at the R&R Temerloh and the Gambang toll plaza.

"We hope once the interstate travel ban is lifted, there will no longer be roadblocks as this can lead to congestions," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said interstate travel restriction would be lifted once 90 per cent of the adult population were fully vaccinated.
