Awie recalls last message from Mamat Khalid [NSTTV]

IPOH: "Love you, bro." These were the last words from famous film director, Mamat Khalid to rock singer Datuk Ahmad Azhar Othman, better known as Awie.

Speaking about receiving the news that Mamat had passed away, Awie said he was on set at the time.

"When there was a break, I took my phone and I saw there were two missed calls from my close friends in Perak.

"From there, I knew something was wrong and I called them back. I was right. Another friend of mine is now gone," he said when met at Mamat's house in Taman Hillview here today.

Awie said they both shared a strong relationship and he described Mamat as his own brother.

"He called me Hussin, a character I played in Zombi Kampung Pisang. I remember he came to me and said, what people said about you was wrong. People called me arrogant, this and that but he said they were all wrong.

"From there, we built our relationship and we have been texting each other like siblings. That was the last message he sent to me…I love you bro," said Awie holding back tears.

Awie added that Mamat's passing was definitely a huge loss to the country and film industry.

"He was the best. He's the one and only, there is no two or three. A director with calibre, a good friend, a brother who taught me a lot about acting, a person with vast knowledge and experience and a generous person," he said.

Mamat or his real name Mohamad Mohd Khalid was pronounced dead at 12.30am this morning while on his way to the Slim River Hospital.

He is also the brother of famous cartoonist, Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, or better known as Lat.

He leaves behind his wife, Hasmah Hassan and five children; Mohd Khalid Amen, Mohd Khalid Adam, Mohd Khalid Zaffa, Sara and Nurhassanah.

Funeral prayers will be held at the Jamek Idris Iskandar Shah Mosque in Sungai Rokam and his body will be laid to rest at the Kampung Paloh Muslim Cemetery.
