Govt to curb social activities if Covid-19 cases spike, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will not hesitate to limit social activities, should there be an increase in Covid-19 cases, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

However, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid said although social activities will be restricted, the economic sector will run as usual.

"The government uses only one standard operating procedure (SOP) when the country moves to the endemic level, which is the public health protocol.

"But, if there is a sudden and increasing number of cases, the government will implement preventive measures and monitor with a 'heightened alert' system, where there are only two categories; high or low.

"If seen as high, the government will restrict social activities, but not economic ones," she said in her reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (Pas-Tumpat).

Che Abdullah had asked whether the government plans to come up with a new plan, as many are starting to disregard SOPs as they are free to carry out social activities, which could contribute to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Mastura added that the government will stick to the existing SOPs, with no plan to come up with new ones to address the matter.
