EC to meet Nov 24 to decide on Sarawak polls

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) will meet on Nov 24 to decide the dates for the 12th Sarawak election.

Its secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said the meeting will be chaired by EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh and will be held at 9am in Kuching, Sarawak.

"The meeting will discuss the important dates of the state election such as the date for the writ of the election, nomination day, polling day, electoral roll to be used for the polls and other preparations to carry out the election," said Ikmalrudin in a statement today.

He also said a press conference will be held immediately after the meeting.

The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly was dissolved effective Nov 3, paving the way for a state election.

The dissolution complied with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's consent to revoke the Proclamation of Emergency for Sarawak.

Istana Negara, in a statement had said the King had taken into account the views of various quarters, including the prime minister, attorney-general as well as the intention and request from the Sarawak government to end the emergency proclamation.

The announcement means the emergency proclaimed in Sarawak has been lifted three months earlier than Feb 2, 2022, the initial date for it to end.
