Melaka polls: PUS, PUI cases may vote with permission, EC says

MELAKA: Those categorised as Person Under Surveillance (PUS) and Person Under Investigation (PUI) for Covid-19 will still be allowed to vote in tomorrow's Melaka state election, Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said.

However, he said, PUS and PUI cases must first obtain permission to do so from their respective District Health Officers.

"Those under PUS and PUI who wish to vote must apply for permission from the District Health Officer to temporarily (leave their houses) to go to the polling centre.

"Voters who have symptoms and do not pass the body temperature screening will still be allowed to vote in special tents monitored by health officials.

"The voters will be managed by a health officer for examination and further action," he said in a statement today.

According to Ikmalrudin, voters would have to go through four stages of sanitising their hands during election day tomorrow where the process would be monitored by EC officers.

The four stages of the hand sanitising process would first begin at the entrance of the polling centre.

Then, he said voters would have to repeat the process when entering their respective voting channel, after dipping their fingers in the voting ink, and lastly just before they leave the polling centre.

"On election day, all voters are required to wear face masks, get their temperatures checked, sanitise their hands, get their attendance recorded and observe physical distancing.

Tomorrow, Ikmalrudin said a total of 12,290 EC officers would be placed at 217 polling centres, consisting of 1,109 channels.

He also called on Melaka voters to not wait until the last minute to cast their ballots.

"The EC would also like to remind employers to allow their employees to vote tomorrow.

Action can be taken again employers who deny their employees the right to vote under Section 25(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954."

At the same time, Ikmalrudin also reminded all political parties to stop campaigning by 11.59pm today, and this would include their campaigns on social media.
