No reports of Omicron variant here yet

IPOH: The Health Ministry today denied that the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron had been detected in Perak.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country has yet to detect cases of the new Omicron strain of Covid-19.

"Not true. No cases been detected yet in Malaysia," he answered briefly when contacted today.

Dr Noor Hisham was commenting on a viral message claiming that the Omicron virus had been detected in Perak and urged everyone to be careful.

Omicron was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) from South Africa on Nov 24 and had been discovered in other countries outside Africa, including Belgium, Hong Kong, Britain, Germany, Italy and Israel.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had, on Nov 26, said travellers with a 14-day travel history to Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe would no longer be allowed to enter Malaysia.
