IJN hive of activity as media keep close watch on Dr M's condition

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Heart Institute (IJN) remains a hive of activity as members of the media continue to gather to keep tabs on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is being hospitalised here.

Today marks the sixth day of the 96-year-old's admission to IJN's coronary care unit (CCU) following what was described as "a follow-up treatment to an elective procedure" he underwent on Jan 8.

As of noon, no official statement has been issued, either by IJN or Dr Mahathir's family regarding the Pejuang founder's health condition.

His daughter Datin Marina had on Sunday issued a statement, saying that her father was still undergoing treatment at the institute and had interacted with family members.

Rumours over the former premier's condition were addressed last Saturday, when Marina said her father's condition was stable and that he had responded well to follow-up treatment.

Dr Mahathir was admitted to IJN on Dec 16 last year for a full medical check-up and further observation. He was discharged on Dec 22.

He had previously undergone two heart bypass operations in 1989 and 2007.
