Health ministry identifies 62 new VOCs from Jan 25-28

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has identified 62 new Variant of Concern (VOC) cases from Jan 25 to 28.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all new VOC cases were of the Delta variant.

"The Integrative Pharmacogenomics Institute, Universiti Teknologi Mara (iPromise, UiTM) identified 46 new cases. The Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, Universiti Malaya (TIDREC, UM) identified 15 new cases while the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) found one new case," he said in a statement today.

The new cases add to the cumulative total of those infected with the SARS-CoV-2 categorised as VOC and Variant of Interest (VOI) to 7,118.

Of the total, Dr Noor Hisham said 7,098 cases were VOC and 20 were VOI cases.

"Of the VOC cases as of today, 6,250 cases are Delta variant cases; 601 Omicron variant cases; 233 Beta variant cases; and 14 Alpha variant cases.

"For VOI cases, there are 13 cases of Theta; four cases of Kappa; and, three cases of Eta variant," he said.
