Seven new Covid-19 clusters identified

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reported another seven new Covid-19 clusters yesterday (Feb 1), bringing the total number of active clusters to 318.

Of the total, five new clusters were linked to education institutions, while the remaining two new clusters were workplace related.

The education clusters were reported in Johor (three), Negri Sembilan (one) and Sabah (one), and workplace clusters were recorded in Selangor and Johor.

According to the Health Ministry's portal CovidNow, the education clusters topped the active cluster list with 187, followed by workplace clusters with 75, community (23), high-risk group (17), import (11), detention centre (three) and religious (two).

Meanwhile, Covid-19 claimed another seven lives yesterday, including one brought-in-dead (BID) case, increasing the nationwide death toll to 31,985.

The fatalities were reported in Johor and Selangor with two cases each, and Pahang, Perak and Terengganu with one case each.

The BID was reported in Perak.

Yesterday, the country's new Covid-19 cases exceeded the 5,000-mark again at 5,339, bringing the total cases since the pandemic hit the country to 2,857,603.

On Monday (Jan 31), Malaysia reported 4,774 new cases.

The national infectivity rate (Rt) also showed an increase from 1.14 to 1.15.

Currently, there are 57,152 active cases, after 3,187 recoveries were reported yesterday.

There are 49,787 (87.1 per cent) individuals observing home quarantine, followed by 4,211 (7.4 per cent) individuals being treated at Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC), 3,041 (5.3 per cent) are hospitalised and the remaining 0.2 per cent are at intensive care units (ICU) with 54 unventilated and 59 ventilated.

As for hospital beds, two states reported utilisation above 70 per cent as of yesterday.

The highest bed usage is in Melaka with 71.1 per cent followed by Terengganu at 70.6 per cent.

Bed utilisation for Covid-19 patients in other states was between 34.2 per cent and 69.7 per cent with the national average standing at 60.2 per cent and Klang Valley at 51.1 per cent.

In terms of ICU utilisation rates for Covid-19 cases, only Kuala Lumpur recorded above the 70 per cent mark at 78 per cent.

The rate in other states was between 21.1 per cent and 65.2 per cent with the national average standing at 49 per cent and Klang Valley at 64.4 per cent.

As for ventilator utilisation, Perak recorded the highest with 55.9 per cent, while Perlis at the lowest with 10.3 per cent.

The national average stands at 33.1 per cent and Klang Valley at 25.7 per cent.

On vaccination rate, as of Jan 31, Malaysia logged 25,713,759 people or 78.7 per cent who have received the full dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, while 26,069,911 or 79.8 per cent are partially vaccinated.

The Health Ministry also reported 11,988,636 booster shots administered so far.

Meanwhile, 88.6 per cent of adolescents have been fully vaccinated while 91.1 per cent have received one dose of the vaccine so far.

As for adults, 99.1 per cent of them have been fully vaccinated with 97.9 receiving at least one dose, while 51.2 per cent have received their booster shots.
