Sabah's Covid-19 cases rise due to backlog

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Covid-19 cases increased to 4,892 today with the city doubling its number of infections due to backlog cases.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the new cases shot up by nearly 1,000 compared to yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu recorded 1,947 new cases, an increase of 1,212 cases.

"A total of 1,214 out of 1,947 cases in Kota Kinabalu are backlog infections that occurred six days ago or longer but were only registered today," he said in a statement.

Nine other districts recorded three-digit cases, namely Tuaran 425 cases, Penampang (415), Papar (290), Tawau (208), Kota Belud (207), Beaufort (194), Sandakan (192), Keningau (144) and Lahad Datu (100).

A total of 16 districts recorded double-digit cases and Kalabakan was the only district to record single-digit cases today.

"Although only 10 districts recorded an increase in cases, the number of new infections in Sabah soared due to the high number of cases in Kota Kinabalu which amounted to almost 2,000," he added.

A total of 99.53 per cent or 4,869 out of 4,892 cases were in Categories 1 and 2, while five cases were in Category 3, 13 cases in Category 4 and five cases in Category 5.

No new cluster was recorded today but Sabah registered seven deaths - two in Tuaran and one each in Keningau, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Kota Marudu and Kudat.

Meanwhile, 531 cases today involved children under 11-years-old who have not been vaccinated, including 241 children under five who are not eligible for vaccination.
