Tumpat district latest to be struck by flood

TUMPAT: Tumpat become the latest Kelantan district to be inundated after floodwaters from rivers upstream reached downstream areas in the district.

The floodwaters that flowed downstream to Tumpat originated from rivers in Kuala Krai, Jeli, Tanah Merah as well as Machang and forced the evacuation of 170 villagers.

It also caused several low-lying areas in the district such as Kampung Simpangan, Kampung Bunuhan as well as Pengkalan Kubor to be inundated.

Pengkalan Kubor assemblyman Wan Roslan Wan Hamat said the 170 flood victims were being sheltered at three flood relief centres here.

"The relief centres are at SK Bunohan, SK Seri Tumpat 2 and SK Pengkalan Kubor 2," he said.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Kelantan continued to improve today as water levels in most rivers in the east coast state receded except for two rivers which remained above their respective warning mark.

The two rivers are Sungai Golok in Kampung Jenob which stood at 22.71m (warning level is 22.50m) and Sungai Kelantan in Kampung Temangan which was at 15.73m (warning level is 15.50m).

The water level measurement was taken at 4pm.

According to the state welfare portal website, only 30 relief centres were still operating as of 4.30pm compared to 60 this morning.

A total of 8,550 evacuees from 2,850 families are being housed at relief centres in three districts.
