PwD carpenter and family among first flood victims evacuated to SK Pengkalan Kubor 2

TUMPAT: A 50-year-old person with disability (PwD) was among the first group of 163 flood victims in the district who were evacuated today.

Carpenter Mohd Noor Musa of Kampung Jejuluk near Pengkalan Kubor, was moved to Pengkalan Kubor 2 relief centre here about 3am, along with his 50-year-old wife Rohani Abdullah and their two sons, aged 11 and 12.

"We were asleep when suddenly my son screamed after seeing floodwaters enter our house. It was around 3am at that time. Seeing the floodwater rising rapidly, we immediately grabbed our belongings and rushed out," he said.

Noor said his family was saved by a passing rescue boat which sent them to the relief centre.

Widow Zainab Taib, 70, was glad that she was rescued in the nick of time when floodwaters began entering her home in Kampung Kubang Sawa here early today.

"I have been staying alone after my husband passed away last month. I did not worry when floodwaters entered my house because l had already packed my belongings.

"I just waded through the floodwater slowly and went to my neighbour's home before we were rescued," said the mother of six.

In total, 163 flood victims from 53 families have been evacuated to the relief centre as of 6pm.

The flood victims at the relief centre were under the care of several agencies including the police, the state welfare department as well as volunteers.
