30 cities identified to achieve GHG emission reductions under LCCMP

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 30 cities nationwide have been identified to achieve the high absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions under the Low Carbon City Master Plan (LCCMP).

Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to achieve this purpose a total of 70 local authorities have been given exposure to the concept and undergone capacity building through the Low Carbon City Challenge 2030 programme.

"Of that number, a total of 41 local authorities are actively involved in implementing the low carbon city initiatives under the programme organised by MGTC (Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation)," he said.

Tuan Ibrahim told this to reporters after attending the 2021 Low Carbon City Awards Ceremony at a hotel here today.

He also said that the previously announced RM35 million incentive under the Low Carbon City Catalyst Grant (Gerak) will be disbursed to 18 local authorities in Kelantan, Terengganu, Sarawak, Perak, Johor and the federal territories that have undertaken low carbon urban projects under the allocation.

He added that a total of 141 local authorities have received allocations for the implementation of low carbon urban initiatives covering the elements of energy, water, waste, mobility and greenery on public grounds.

"The Gerak implementation is expected to involve 146 local companies nationwide with a greenhouse gas reduction potential of 110,969 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent," he said.

The ceremony today was aimed at recognising the commitment of enforcement officers from local authorities, government bodies and private organisations in reducing GHG emissions through the Low Carbon Cities 2030 Challenge (LCC2030C) programme.

Tuan Ibrahim said the total reduction in GHG emissions recorded in 2021 by local authorities and their partners who received this recognition amounted to 157,923.23 tons of carbon dioxide which is equivalent for low carbon zones, while another 12,975.85 tons of carbon dioxide was achieved for low carbon partners.

Twenty-two entries were awarded Provisional Certificates on efforts to develop benchmark data and low-carbon action plans in low-carbon zones and partnered areas.

Meanwhile, 43 Diamond Recognitions were awarded for GHG emission reduction achievements including one diamond recognition for the design category involving the Gamuda Cove development area.
