IGP advises travellers to keep abreast of latest advisory, protocols

PUTRAJAYA: Police have reminded the public to check the latest protocols before travelling into Malaysia as the country reopens its international borders today.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the situation was "very much under control" save for the congestion observed at the Johor - Singapore border.

"We will make sure that there is enough manpower to monitor the situation at entry points including up north and Kelantan.

"We did see congestion in Johor but no untoward incidents were reported there," he told reporters after attending the EAIC appreciation ceremony for enforcement agencies here today.

He praised the level of cooperation shown by the public in ensuring smooth travels and advised them to stay up to date with the latest regulations and standard operating procedure (SOP), especially when entering and leaving the country.

More than 11,000 travellers have crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints hours after the border reopening took effect after midnight, with many people seen opting to walk across the Johor Causeway from the Singapore Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex towards Malaysia.

At the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this morning, a Saudi Airlines aircraft from Jeddah was the first international flight to land today, carrying passengers including Malaysians returning from their umrah pilgrimage, Bernama reported.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri earlier said the reopening of the border would bring a positive impact to the tourism sector, with two million international tourists expected to arrive in Malaysia this year.
