Don't be complacent, PM reminds Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has advised the people not to be complacent despite the country's recent transition into the Covid-19 endemicity phase.

In his televised Ramadan address, Ismail Sabri said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, Muslims in the country were not able to enliven mosques with activities such as breaking of fast and moreh (supper), while congregational and tarawih prayers were bound by strict standard operating procedures (SOP).

"Alhamdulillah, we are now in a phase of transition to endemic, which allows the Malaysian Family (people) to return to normalcy.

"Ramadan this year, Muslims will be able to close the gap during congregational and tarawih prayers and attend the Ihya Ramadan (enliven Ramadan events), subject to the ruling by respective state religious authorities.

"(And) many will be returning to their hometowns to celebrate Ramadan after not being able to do so previously.

"However, despite the flexibility given, it is still mandatory to wear face masks in public places.

"Do not be complacent and continue to practice self-control," he said.

Ismail Sabri added that the Ramadan month was an opportunity for one to increase the practice of alms giving, among others.

"May the month of Ramadan strengthen the spiritual aspect of the Malaysian Family.

"At the same time, it is very important for Muslims to maintain a relationship not only with the Almighty but also with fellow human beings.

"Having said that, I wish a happy Ramadan and happy fasting to the Muslims of the Malaysian Family."

The first day of fasting in the month of Ramadan is tomorrow.
