Langkawi to ride on LITB success

LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Tourism Bubble (LITB) has recorded 10,216 international travellers, generating RM50 million in tourist receipts between Nov 15 and Mar 31.

Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) chief executive officer, Nasaruddin Abdul Muttalib said based on the success, the agency was confident that the Kedah tourism jewel would attract 2.5 million visitors by the end of this year.

"Inspired by the success of LITB and following the reopening of the country's borders last Friday, Lada is confident the number of visitors can reach up to 2.5 million, generating tourist receipts worth some RM3.2 billion by the end of this year.

"We are optimistic of reaching the figure because, by this June, several countries in the northern hemisphere and the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will experience summer," he told a press conference here today.

Nasaruddin said this after opening the Tourism Information Centre operated by Tropical Charters Sdn Bhd (Tropical Charters) at the Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa, here.

Also present were Tourism Malaysia's senior director of International Promotion (Asia/Africa) Division P. Manoharan, and Tropical Charters Chief Executive Officer Datuk Alexander Issac.

Commenting on the opening of the tourist information centre in the tourist hotspot of Pantai Chenang, Nasaruddin said it was another step forward to boost the tourism industry on the island which was severely affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

"The centre, developed through a smart partnership between the private sector and the government, has the potential to be a hub for the sale of packages and tourism products, thus making it easier for tourists to get information.

"This approach should be highlighted, various parties need to create new ideas and creative actions to rejuvenate our tourism sector," he said.
