Japanese ambassador 'feels like a Malaysian' after first taste of durian

KUALA LUMPUR: Japanese ambassador Katsuhiko Takahashi seems to have taken a liking to durian, dubbed as the world's most divisive fruit.

With an aroma so strong, the thorny fruit also known as the "king of fruits" is either loved or hated, intensely.

Takahashi yesterday shared a short clip of him trying the fleshy fruit on his Twitter page.

"Today I had my first durian in my life. It was good! I really feel that I am now a Malaysian," he tweeted.

In the clip, Takahashi described the durian as being "not bad" after taking a whiff off it from a fork and having tried it, he said it was much better than he had expected the fruit to be.

Netizens chimed in with their recommendations of the best durians to try such as the Musang King.

"Please do try the Musang King. You would love it," wrote one.

"Congratulations, you passed. You're now one of us," another said.

"Ambassador Takahashi, glad that you liked it. Highly recommend eating it with hand," one wrote.

Other Malaysians recommended popular local delicacies for the ambassador to try.

"Takahashi san, you should try this also. Popia Begedil," a netizen wrote.

"Try nasi lemak, sir and teh tarik," another tweeted.

"Sir, you must try cendol, rojak sengkuang calit and rempeyek kacang tanah," a Malaysian suggested.
