More than 300 children orphaned by Covid-19 in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: More than 300 children in Kelantan were made orphaned after their parents died from Covid-19.

State Welfare, Family and Women Development Committee chairman Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi said the children were from all over the state.

Mumtaz said the figure was recorded as of last month and she believed it would continue to rise.

"The latest figures received from the Education Department was last month, where up to 300 children became orphans after one or both their parents died due to the pandemic.

"Some of them are at primary schools while others are still small," she said after attending a 'makan colek' session with local media practitioners here last night.

"Village heads should help us in gathering information as we do not want anyone to be left behind," she added.

She said apart from the state government's assistance, these orphans also received financial aid and other froms of assistance from others including the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK).

"Some of the orphans are now under the care of their other family members and relatives," she added.
