Two teens drown after jetty collapses

SEMPORNA: Two teenagers drowned after a jetty they were on near the Gading-Gading General Operations Force (PGA) post collapsed yesterday.

In the 4pm incident, eight teenagers, aged between 11 and 19, were hanging out at a hut on the jetty when the incident took place.

District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said six victims, four boys and two girls, were rescued while another two were reported missing.

He said an immediate search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched by the authorities and they were also assisted by villagers.

"After over 30 minutes of SAR, the bodies of the two teenagers, aged 14 and 19, respectively, were found and retrieved.

"Both victims were given emergency help by the medical team before being pronounced dead at 5.30pm," he said.

Farhan said further investigations were still ongoing, including identifying the cause of the incident.

"The case is classified as a sudden death report (SDR)," he said.

He also advised the village committee to inspect the jetty in their respective villages to ensure the safety of users.
