Wee: Committee formed to audit Prasarana's fleet of trains

KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) has set-up a committee to carry out an audit on all of its 26 four-coach (Bombardier 818 series) fleet of trains.

The decision to form the committee, comprising Canada-based Bombardier and external auditors, was made following the disruption involving the Kelana Jaya Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) on Friday.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the audit, scheduled to start on Tuesday, is expected to conclude in two weeks.

"The recent incident (on Friday involving a train on the Kelana Jaya Line) occurred 11 days after the first incident (involving a failed train at the Taman Jaya LRT station).

"Therefore, we wanted to know what is the core issue and problem of this fleet of trains," he told reporters after inspecting facilities at the Ampang Park LRT station here today.

Also in attendance was Prasarana president and group chief executive officer Azharuddin Mat Sah.

The Bombardier 818 series, which commenced operations since 2009, is one of the four fleets of trains operating along the Kelana Jaya LRT line.

The Kelana Jaya LRT service was disrupted for two hours on Friday after one of the Bombardier trains stalled due to a brake caliper hydraulic leakage. The disruption affected 22,100 passengers.

The problem occurred way before the train is scheduled to undergo its Mid-Life Refurbishment (MLR), which is usually done 15 years after the train is in operation.

"We want to identify why the train brakes deteriorated before its life span and before it was supposed to undergo the MLR.

"Apart from inspecting the brake, the audit will also check other parts of the train to avoid recurrence of the recent incident and to ensure the safety of passengers," he said.
