Police identify 135 active illegal jetties along Kelantan-Thai border

RANTAU PANJANG: Police have identified 135 illegal jetties along the Kelantan-Thai border that have been used by smugglers to bring in contraband.

Federal police Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the 135 were among 175 illegal jetties set up by smugglers along the border.

"We have identified 135 active jetties used not only for drug smuggling but also other types of illegal activities.

"These illegal jetties or rat routes will be on our radar and we have had a lot of success in our operations," he told reporters after visiting the Kelantan-Thai border here today.

Ayub said for instance, 2,219kg of syabu and 1kg of cannabis were seized by police last year in areas near the border.

"Apart from that, they also seized methamphetamine pills (1.6kg), heroin (100kg) and ketamine (44kg).

"The majority of the seizures were made near illegal jetties," he added.

Ayub also spent more than 30 minutes holding a discussion with officers from the Customs and Immigration departments on border issues.
