Two killed in lorry-trailer crash on Penang bridge

GEORGE TOWN: A lorry driver and his co-driver were killed in a crash involving their lorry and a trailer at KM8.6 of the Penang Bridge, island-bound, early this morning.

The 54-year-old trailer driver escaped unhurt.

The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the incident about 5.17am.

A spokesman said when they arrived at the scene, they found the three-tonne lorry had crashed into the rear of a trailer.

"The lorry driver, 39, and his co-driver, 19, were pinned to their seats and we managed to extricate them.

"Both victims, who sustained serious injuries, died at the scene," he said.

The first victim was taken out from the lorry using rescue tools about 5.55am while the second about 6.02am.

Both remains have been handed over to the police for further action.

The operation was called off about 6.16am.

Following the crash, there was a massive congestion stretching several kilometres from the mainland heading towards the island.

Many office workers were delayed several hours due to the congestion.

A photo had also gone viral showing a Universiti Sains Malaysia student, with his graduation robe, asking for a ride to the university for his graduation ceremony.
