Ministry to study why almost 25,000 students opted out of SPM exam

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry will analyse the reasons why nearly 25,000 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates did not sit for the exam earlier this year.

Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said some candidates chose not to take the exam despite intervention by school administrators.

Most of them, he said, involved private candidates.

"For school students, some teachers and principals had gone to meet the candidates and their parents. Because they were the first batch of the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah, the candidates were urged to return to school and prepare for the exam.

"Some chose not to because of personal reasons such as family problems and financial challenges.

"We will look at the data in a more in-depth manner and assess if there is a rising trend over the years. We will decide on the appropriate steps to overcome this," he said at SMK Putrajaya Presint 18(1) here today.

Radzi said these candidates could take the exam in September for Mathematics, Bahasa Melayu and History at selected centres.

It was reported that 407,907 students had registered for the 2021 SPM exam. Of this, 24,941 candidates did not sit the exam.
