MoE to hire more boarding school wardens, raise allowances

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will be hiring more wardens in boarding schools under the ministry and increase their allowance rate.

Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said the ministry will hire 3,813 new wardens, which will raise the total number of wardens employed in boarding schools nationwide to 9,868.

This, he said, marked a 63 per cent increase from the current number of wardens that stood at 6,055.

"Hiring more wardens in boarding schools will enable them to take turns for their duties on a rotation basis.

"Besides that, the allowance rate for wardens will also be raised by 25 per cent.

"The new allowance rate for chief warden will be RM350 per month, while other wardens will be paid RM300 per month.

"The last time the allowance rate for wardens was revised was in 1997," he said through a short video today.

Both measures, Radzi said, will involve a financial implication of RM19 million and will take effect on Aug 1.

At present, there are currently 1,874 boarding schools under the ministry's purview.
