Stay alert, Khairy says over new Omicron sub-variants

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has reminded the people not to take the threat of Covid-19 lightly following the spread of Omicron sub-variants around the world.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that over 110 countries had reported a spike in Covid-19 cases linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants.

Apart from Malaysia, he said that neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia were experiencing a surge in daily cases.

"Many around us who have not been infected with Covid-19 over the past two years now find themselves infected.

"Wear face masks in closed and crowded areas, adopt TRIIS (Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek)," he wrote on Twitter today.

"Get your booster shots if you haven't, and the second booster dose for senior citizens and high risk groups."

Malaysia logged 2,932 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, a sharp increase from 1,918 cases the day before.

The BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants have become the dominant coronavirus strains in a number of countries abroad.

According to reports, the strains were first detected in South Africa earlier this year.
