Khairy to hold press conference on latest Covid-19 situation

PUTRAJAYA: Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is scheduled to hold a press conference on the latest Covid-19 wave of infection at 3pm today.

Malaysia registered 4,020 new cases yesterday, breaching the 4,000 mark since April this year.

"(Covid-19) cases have exceeded 4,000. This is the new wave of Covid-19 infections that I meant in the last few weeks.

"A press conference will be held at 3pm today to inform some important matters," he said.

The last time the country hit the 4,000 daily cases mark was on April 24, with 4,006 Covid-19 infections.

In the past few days, Malaysia has been seeing a steady rise of coronavirus daily cases since Monday with 1,918 cases, 2,932 on Tuesday and 3,561 on Wednesday.

On June 23, Khairy said a new wave of Covid-19 infections in the country is expected to occur earlier than expected in the next two to three months based on a rise in daily cases.

Khairy said, however the country was prepared for the new wave and stressed that his statement was not to cause panic among Malaysians, but to serve as a preventive measure to control the transition to the endemic phase.

Yesterday, Khairy also reminded the people to stay vigilant during the celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha, practice TRIIS (Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek) and perform a Covid-19 self-test before embarking on their journey home.

Khairy said daily cases soared to 3,410 during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration on May 12, among factors that caused the cases to surge was increased movement in the community and gatherings.
