Raja Muda of Kedah expresses grief over Baling flash floods

BALING: The Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin has expressed grief over the flash floods and water surge phenomenon that occurred here on Monday.

Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah said he was shocked and saddened when learning about the disaster, which claimed three lives, as it was the second tragedy after the first water surge incident in Gunung Jerai in August last year.

He said this after visiting the location. He was accompanied by the Raja Puan Muda of Kedah Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff and their children, Tunku Zara Bahiyah and Tunku Sulaiman Badlishah.

He said he hoped the victims would remain patient and that the state government would help them by providing accommodation for victims who lost their homes, as well as other forms of aid.

"I would like to thank the police, firefighters, non-governmental organisations, local authorities and those who came to help with the rescue operation, clean-up and the affected villagers," he said.

Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah advised residents living near rivers and mountain areas to relocate to safer locations if there was an early warning of an imminent flood and soil erosion.

"If there is heavy rain, listen to this early warning. Please move (to a safer place). If the police come to inform you to relocate, then please do so," he said.

Earlier, he and Che Puan Muda Zaheeda were briefed at the control post at the scene of the incident before inspecting the collapsed bridge in Kampung Iboi and crossing a river via a Bailey bridge, which was built by the Public Works Department and army today.

The two presented cash donations and daily necessities to the affected families.-- BERNAMA
