Slight drop in new Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia logged 3,936 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (July 17), pushing the national toll to 4,622,981.

The daily figure was a reduction from the 5,047 infections reported on July 17.

According to data from the Health Ministry's CovidNow website and Github, of the fresh cases, 3,935 were local transmissions while one was imported.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur topped the list with 1,491 and 1,055 new cases, respectively.

Perak reported 268 new cases, followed by 232 in Penang, 231 in Sabah, 187 in Negri Sembilan, 108 in Melaka, 86 in Johor, 80 in Kedah, 70 in Pahang, 38 in Sarawak, 32 in Kelantan, 31 in Terengganu and 12 in Putrajaya.

Perlis and Labuan reported eight and seven cases each, respectively.

Another seven deaths were reported yesterday, including three brought in-dead cases, taking the country's cumulative death toll to 35,855.

Another 3,899 recoveries were reported yesterday.

As of Sunday, active Covid-19 cases nationwide stood at 42,511.

Of the total, 40,933 individuals were placed under home quarantine, 1,484 patients were hospitalised, 38 were ventilated in the intensive care units (ICU) and another 23 unventilated.

The remaining 33 patients have been placed at Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC).

Currently, 69.5 per cent of hospital beds nationwide are occupied, while 63.9 per cent of ICU beds, 40.3 per cent of ventilators and 24 per cent of PKRC beds are being utilised for Covid-19 treatment purposes.

Meanwhile, on vaccination progress, 1,447,140 children aged five to 11 have been fully vaccinated under the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme for Children (PICKids).

According to the portal, 1,766,863 children have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

As for adolescents aged 12 to 17, a total of 2,891,582 have received two doses and 2,971,022 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

As for adults, 16,118,214 have received their first booster dose as of yesterday; while another 217,508 have received their second booster dose.

Yesterday, 12,634 doses were administered, with 398 as the first dose, 5,757 as the second dose and 809 booster doses, bringing the total number of vaccine doses administered under the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP) to 71,604,512.
