RTD: Big bikers using learner's licence for long period

BENTONG: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has detected a tactic employed by superbike riders who use their learner's driving licence (LDL) for an extended period, including when taking part in motorcycle convoys.

RTD deputy director-general (Planning and Operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli said: "These motorcyclists also do not have both licences (L and Class B). This should not happen. They are not supposed to ride motorcycles with a capacity of more than 250cc.

"These motorcyclists are advised to get a Class B licence immediately because they can face severe legal action if caught without a proper licence."

Aedy said this after participating in 'Ops Lejang' Phase 1 at the Bentong Toll Plaza, here today.

He said out of more than 3,000 motorcycles inspected, 796 motorcyclists were issued summonses for various traffic offences in the operations that started at 8am.

"Most of the offences were related to not having a driving licence and valid road tax," he said.

Meanwhile, Aedy said from 2018 to last June, a total of 3.7 million motorcycles nationwide have been inspected and 1.3 million motorcyclists were slapped with summonses by the RTD.

"Among the highest offences were riding without a licence which comprised 471,665 cases, riding with expired licences (313,174 cases) and no insurance coverage (299,772 cases)".

He said RTD would increase monitoring and enforcement on federal and state highways and roads, from time to time, to deal with illegal racing and dangerous riding.
