Party-hopping bill different from other bills, says Wan Junaidi

KUALA LUMPUR: The highly anticipated Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 3) 2022 on the prohibition of members of parliament (MPs) from party-hopping is said to be different from other laws.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the pattern of the bill would not be similar to the existing bills in the country.

"This is because it was done by the parliamentary select committee, not the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

"There are two more engagement sessions to be done, one for the opposition tomorrow and another for the government the next day.

"Then we are going to table it, we do not have much time," he said after attending the Lang International Corporate Titans Awards (LICTA) 2021 here today.

Wan Junaidi is expected to do his winding up speech on the bill on July 28.

The sought-after Anti-Party Hopping Bill was expected to be tabled earlier this year, however, it has been postponed multiple times.

The draft Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 3) 2022 had been approved to prohibit Dewan Rakyat members from switching parties.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is scheduled to table the bill this Wednesday.
