No employer charged yet over new minimum wage [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: No employer has been charged yet for not abiding with the new minimum wage of RM1,500 a month, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said this was because the new minimum wage was only implemented on May 1, and the salaries for May were only received by most employees in early June.

"Until June 30, 2022, no employer has been charged with failing to adhere to the Minimum Wage Order 2022.

"Statistics of those who fail to abide cannot be prepared yet as the enforcement of this order only began on May 1. Compliance can only be ascertained through periodic checks.

"Suspension of this order is only applicable to employers with fewer than five people. This is to give them enough time to make the necessary preparations."

Up to June 30 this year, Saravanan said 20,452 employers had been inspected and 3,049 workplaces had been checked.

"The Labour Department will investigate if any complaints are made," he said.

He said the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department had received a total of 157 complaints from workers on the minimum wage.

Of the total, he said, 118 employers had not complied to the minimum wage order.

"If they fail (to adhere to the order), legal action will be taken against them," he said in Parliament today.
