MEF applauds PM's call to observe minimum wage requirements

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has welcomed the recent call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to observe the RM1,500 minimum wage requirements that have been implemented since May this year.

MEF President Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the call by the Prime Minister was made during the Jamin Kerja Keluarga Malaysia Career Expo yesterday, that employers should reward their employees with the right salary to ensure their wellbeing.

"Employers must honour the minimum wage rate of RM1,500 that was put into effect this year. We believe that most employers have taken the necessary measures to comply with the minimum wage requirement.

"However, some may not be able to comply post-Covid-19. MEF advises the affected employers to raise any issues on the implementation so we could work to resolve the issues," he said.

Syed Hussain said apart from the minimum wage issues, MEF also urged employers to ensure the right compensation package is given to employees following job evaluation.

"Many changes have taken place at the workplace such as downsizing, rightsizing, multi-skilling line with the new working environment. A proper job evaluation needs to be done," he stressed.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob expressed his disappointment in the lack of effort by employers to offer Malaysians salaries that commensurate with their qualifications during the Jamin Kerja Keluarga Malaysia Career Expo.

Based on statistical findings on MyFutureJobs, Ismail Sabri said the average wage for most job openings was between RM1,000 and RM2,000 a month.
