PIA, part of southwest district hit by power outage [NSTTV]

GEORGE TOWN: Several parts of the southwest district have been affected by the major outage that hit various parts of the peninsula this afternoon.

Among them were the Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas and a private college in Bayan Baru.

The blackout at the airport, about 1pm, lasted between five and 30 minutes.

Although several shops in the airport were reportedly in the dark for about five minutes, the taxi counter was without electricity supply for 30 minutes.

An employee manning the taxi counter, Mohamad Azuan Ishak, 32, said there were not many people at the airport during the blackout.

He said they had to issue manual tickets instead of the usual printed ones.

"We only issued about 10 manual tickets throughout the 30 minutes as there were not that many people at the airport at the time. There were no flights arriving at that time.

"The electricity supply to other shops resumed without five minutes. However, ours took 30 minutes," he said when met.

An employee at a convenience store, Safinah Suhor, 34, said the outage only lasted five minutes.

"The electricity supply was cut suddenly. We could not use the refrigerator, the microwave and other electrical items. Luckily, it was only for a short duration," she added.

Meanwhile, a lecturer at a private multimedia college in Bayan Baru, Norisha Mohd Saad, 38, said the blackout happened twice.

"The first blackout happened about 11.10am which lasted for 20 minutes. At that time, I had to stop lessons at the computer lab.

"Subsequently, another blackout happened about 12.30pm," she said.
