Covid-19 fatalities see a declining trend, says Dr Noor Hisham

KUALA LUMPUR: The country's Covid-19 fatalities and new cases have been on a declining trend in the 30th Epidemiology Week (ME30).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement today, said the number of Covid-19 fatalities had dropped from 63 cases in ME29 to 49 in ME30.

"New cases also reported a decrease of 5.2 per cent, or 29,886, to 28,339 cases compared with the previous week.

"Local transmission cases have also reduced to 5.3 per cent, or 29,858 cases to 28,339, while imported cases reported an increasing trend of 89.3 per cent or 28 cases to 53," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said the number of admissions of Covid-19 patients to public hospitals, however, increased by 2.8 per cent.

"Patients in categories 1 and 2 increased by 5.6 per cent while numbers for patients in categories 3, 4 and 5 remained the same.

"Intensive Care Unit beds (occupancy) remain the same at 14 per cent while bed occupancy at Low-Risk Covid-19 Quarantine Treatment Centres (PKRC) remained at seven per cent," he said.

Meanwhile, the number of cases requiring respiratory assistance dropped by 0.1 per cent. Average active cases stood at 47,176 cases in ME30, a rise of 3.6 per cent from ME29.

"The number of cases referred to Covid-19 Assessment Centres (CAC) saw an increase of 3.2 per cent. Covid-19 cases referred by CACs to PKRCs showed a significant decrease of 19.9 per cent and new Covid-19 cases undergoing home quarantine also declined by 0.5 per cent," he said.

He added that the number of cases observed via virtual CACs also dropped by 7.69 per cent from 70,140 cases in ME29 to 64,743 in ME30. The number of Covid-19 recoveries, said Dr Noor Hisham, showed a positive trend, rising by 35.4 per cent from 22,757 cases in ME29 to 30,823 cases in ME30.

The average R-naught (infectivity rate) value also showed a decrease of 9.1 per cent in ME30 from ME29. A total of 107 Surveillance for influenza-like illnesses samples were detected positive for Covid-19 with a positive rate of 14.5 per cent on ME30 and no Severe Acute Respiratory Infection samples were detected positive for Covid-19 with the positive rate remaining at 0 per cent.
