Anwar submits motion to refer bill to a parliamentary select committee

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has submitted a motion to refer the Tobacco and Smoking Control Bill to a parliamentary select committee.

The Port Dickson MP said this had to be done to examine and put some focus on its related constitutional issues.

He said it was also needed to allow all quarters to consider issues related to enforcement and the control over tobacco products and smoking.

The motion was submitted to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun and a similar letter was sent to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Anwar said while Pakatan Harapan lawmakers supported the bill in principle, they were concerned over certain issues related to enforcement.

He added that membership of the committee should comprise several Dewan Rakyat members representing all parties and led by Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Anwar also said the committee should prepare a statement on proposals related to the bill and matters related to tobacco and smoking control within a period of one month.

He said this period could extended if there was a need.
