New Covid-19 cases jump to 4,204 on Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: New Covid-19 cases shot up from 2,783 infections on Sunday to 4,204 on Tuesday.

However, the number of active cases has steadily declined in the same period since the country has logged more new recoveries.

Up to Tuesday, Malaysia had 44,278 active cases and 19 active clusters.

Two new clusters were reported, including one workplace cluster in Selangor and one education cluster in Negri Sembilan.

Another eight people died due to Covid-19 on Tuesday. These included two brought-in-dead (BID) cases. The country has been reporting deaths in single digits since July 26.

On average, 26 deaths have occurred for every 10 million people over the past two weeks.

So far, the virus has claimed 35,985 lives with almost one-fifth of the fatalities being BID cases.

On Tuesday, 534 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals for treatment, bringing the total number of admissions to 1,537.

At present, 56 patients are in intensive care units, with 36 requiring ventilator support.

Up to Tuesday, 1.1 per cent of the population (360,136 people) have received their second booster dose.

Meanwhile, 4,582 people have recovered, bringing the recovery tally to 4,607,207.
