Second highest daily Covid-19 figures since nation entered new wave

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia logged 5,330 new Covid-19 cases, the second highest daily figure since the Health Ministry declared that the country is entering new wave with the presence of the Omicron B.A.5 variant a month ago.

The highest daily toll was on July 20 with 5,685 cases recorded since April 23.

The Klang Valley remains the main contributor to the daily fresh cases with more than 67 per cent of the infections reported in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya yesterday.

Selangor's 2,054 infections on Wednesday were the highest followed by Kuala Lumpur with 1,449 infections and Putrajaya had 81 cases.

For other states, Perak logged 316 cases, Sabah had 277 cases, Negri Sembilan (227 cases), Penang (195 cases), Melaka (169 cases), Kedah (137 cases), Johor (113 cases), Sarawak (92 cases), Kelantan (72 cases), Pahang (66 cases), Terengganu (47 cases), Perlis (24 cases) and Labuan (11 cases).

The Health Ministry also received reports on 3,075 recoveries and 10 deaths yesterday.

To date, 4,692,800 people in the country had been infected with the coronavirus.

The country's active cases continued to climb to 46,523 with 44,885 people or 96.5 per cent undergoing home quarantine, 1,560 people or 3.4 per cent hospitalised, 49 people treated at intensive care units (ICU) and 29 cases isolated at Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC).

Yesterday, 555 Covid-19 cases were admitted to hospitals.

The Health Ministry also identified a new education cluster – Lengkungan Duta cluster – in Kepong on Aug 3 with 24 cases linked to the said cluster.

Meanwhile, 1.6 per cent of the adult population or 366,743 people aged 18 and above had received the second booster jab.

So far, six groups are eligible to receive the second booster shot, namely those aged 60 and above with comorbidities; those aged 60 and above without comorbidities; individuals living at long-term care facilities; individuals aged 18 to 59 with comorbidities; frontliners, and healthy individuals aged 50 to 59.
