Lam Thye: P-hailing riders' grievances should be addressed promptly

KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities should address issues brought up by food delivery (p-hailing) riders following their one-day strike on Friday.

Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye today said p-hailing riders were unsung frontliners and their concerns should be looked into.

"These riders are the backbone of the gig economy. Many people depend on them.

"Because of their services, many households can order food and goods without having to expose themselves to Covid-19 and other dangers."

Lee said one of the issues raised by the riders was that they were not adequately compensated for their work.

He said the riders had highlighted their grievances in a memo to Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan two years ago, but there had been no response.

"All parties should resolve their problems quickly so that people who rely on their services will not face hardship.

"At the same time, the employers and authorities must also look into their safety on the road.

"It is a common sight to see these riders beating traffic lights and weaving in and out of traffic, causing a danger to themselves and other road users.

"We need to resolve the issues facing this part of the gig economy, and the sooner we do it, the better."
