Covid-19 hospital admissions up compared with previous epidemiological week

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Covid-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 population has increased in the 32th epidemiological week (EW) between Aug 7 and Aug 13 compared with the previous week.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said hospital admissions for Category 1 and 2 cases had increased by 5.3 per cent and Category 3,4 and 5 admissions rose to 11.4 per cent.

In EW 31, the hospital admissions of Category 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 population was 3.8 and 4.0 per cent, respectively, in EW 32. Hospital admissions of Category 3,4, and 5 cases had increased from 3.5 to 3.9.per cent per 100,000 population.

Dr Noor Hisham said the utilisation rate of healthcare facilities was also on the rise.

"The non-critical bed usage increased by one per cent, and the same goes to the Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre (PKRC) beds, which increased by one per cent. Intensive care unit (ICU) bed usage went up by two per cent," he said yesterday.

He added that ventilator usage had increased by 0.3 per cent from EW31 to EW32, and cases monitored by the Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) also increased nationwide.

"Cases that are physically presented to CACs have risen by 3.9 per cent, from 13,238 to 13,757 cases, and Covid-19 cases that are referred to hospitals have increased 66.4 per cent from 220 cases to 366 cases.

"However, active cases that are being monitored by the virtual CAC have decreased by 5.5 per cent from 66,182 cases to 62,516," he explained.

On daily cases, Dr Noor Hisham said the cumulative new cases during EW32 had reduced from 28,554 to 26,678, whereas recoveries increased from 28,604 to 28,905. He said average active cases had also reduced by 2.7 per cent to 44,706.

The infectivity rate (Rt) was also lowered, with the average national Rt at 0.98 during EW32 compared with 1.1 in the previous week.
