MOH facilities to adopt cultural, organisational changes - Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will adopt cultural and organisational changes at its facilities following the report by the Healthcare Work Culture Improvement Task Force (HWCITF) today.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said although the findings by the HWCITF found no element of bullying connected to the death of a 25-year-old houseman in Penang Hospital earlier this year, burnout and bullying incidents had taken place at several health facilities.

"I have taken note of the HWCTIF report. Although there was no bullying element connected to the houseman's death in Penang Hospital, incidents of burnout, bullying and unhealthy work culture have been confirmed to happen at several health facilities.

"We will have to institute cultural and organisational change at the Ministry of Health based on the recommendations," he said in a statement on Twitter.

Earlier, HWCITF reported that it found no element of bullying that allegedly caused the death of the houseman in Penang Hospital earlier this year.

Taskforce chairman Professor Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said based on its findings, there was no "strong evidence" that connected the death to alleged bullying at the workplace.

The task force presented 10 recommendations, which include, among other things, setting up a Medical Qualifying Committee, houseman candidate screening, standardisation for housemanship training, and improving the E-Houseman system.
