Decision on chicken export ban will be out today

KUALA LUMPUR: The cabinet will decide today whether the export ban on chicken would be lifted, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) deputy minister Datuk Rosol Wahid said.

He said this was after a discussion between KPDNHEP and the Agriculture and Food Industry yesterday.

"This is following reports on the oversupply of chicken in (local) markets as well as the high demand by Singapore for us to export chicken there.

"So today, we'll have to wait for a decision by the cabinet," he told reporters when met at the Kopi Merdeka campaign by Tealive here today.

The government had stopped the export of the monthly 3.6 million chickens since June 1.

This was part of the government's efforts to ensure a stable supply of chicken for domestic consumption.

It was reported that this decision was temporary, and would be revised once the supply of chicken in the country was stabilised.

On the rise in chicken prices, Rosol admitted that the issue remains despite the country now having a stable chicken supply.

"Actually, there should not be any excuse for sellers to maintain the high price and if they continue to be stubborn, the ministry will find ways to address this.

"If there are complaints, we will investigate them under the Price Control Anti-Profiteering Act 2011."
