RM1 nasi lemak seller unhappy to be linked to Sg Ara chicken rice controversy

BAYAN LEPAS: A RM1 nasi lemak seller in Persiaran Paya Terubong, Bukit Jambul, is upset at being linked to the recent viral Sungai Ara chicken rice stall owner who had operated without halal certification.

The 24-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Sue, said her sister told her yesterday about a viral message, alleging that she was the same person as the chicken rice trader.

"My husband knows the chicken and duck rice seller. But we should not be dragged into the controversy just because we know each other.

"I am sad that the message had gone viral without any verification. They should have asked me about it first. I tried to contact the person who uploaded it via messenger for clarification.

"Netizens have threatened to take action against me. Today, I am doing business in fear.

"I opened this stall to sell nasi lemak and sandwiches over a month ago to earn extra income to cope with expenses when my baby arrives next month," said the heavily-pregnant Sue when met at her stall, here, today.

She said she might lodge a police report as she feared untoward incidents.

"I am not suspecting anyone but I hope that person will come forward and clear my name," she said.

Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman yesterday said no action would be taken against the Sungai Ara chicken rice stall owner who had been accused of serving non-halal food as no offences had been committed according to Islamic laws.

He had said the chicken rice stall owner had obtained the chicken and duck meat from non-Muslim sources, but there was no law prohibiting it.

He had advised food businesses which intend to sell their food products as halal to get proper halal certification.

Those with no certification, he said, should not confuse the public.

The issue came to light after a two-minute, 38-second video clip went viral showing two men outside a non-Muslim restaurant in Paya Terubong where they unloaded food containers from the trunk of a car and brought them inside.

It was alleged that the food obtained from the restaurant was later sold at a Muslim-owned chicken rice stall in Sungai Ara.

It was understood that after the footage had gone viral, the stall owner was forced to temporarily close his business.
