KD Lekiu takes part in biennial Exercise Kakadu in Darwin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is taking part in the multinational naval manoeuvre dubbed Exercise Kakadu 2022 (KA22).

The naval exercise ends Sept 24, in Darwin, Australia.

This is the second time RMN is taking part in a large-scale international exercise in 2022 following its participation in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (Rimpac) 2022 in Hawaii, United States, last month.

RMN's flagship, KD Lekiu, left its Lumut base on Aug 23 and arrived on Sept 12 to take part in the biennial regional maritime exercise.

RMN today said activities conducted during KA22 not only involved military preparations but would also emphasise cooperation, leadership and friendship between nations taking part in the exercise.

"Exercise Kakadu involves the navy at the international level which seeks to further strengthen ties between the participating countries.

"The theme for this year's exercise is 'Partnership, Leadership, Friendship' and we aim to show this over the 15 days of intense activity at sea and ashore.

"Exercise Kakadu provides an excellent opportunity for regional partners to conduct multinational maritime activities ranging from enforcement operations to high-level maritime warfare in a combined environment," said Australia Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond.

Exercise Kakadu is a joint-enabled, biennial exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy and supported by the Royal Australian Air Force involving Indo-Pacific countries.

This year's exercise involved 3,000 participants, 15 ships and over 30 aircraft from over 20 countries.
