Government allocates RM16.4 million for 2022/2023 flood season

KOTA BARU: The government has allocated more than RM16 million in assistance for the 2022/2023 northeast monsoon season.

National Disaster Management Agency deputy director-general (Operations section) Meor Ismail Meor Akim said of the figure, RM8 million would be set aside for state disaster management committees to distribute to 160 districts.

He added another RM1.08 million was channelled to eight agencies and the management committees' secretariats such as police, Fire and Rescue Department and Welfare Department.

Apart from that, he said RM2.6 million would be allocated for Phase 1 maintenance and improvement of flood relief centres nationwide.

"As preparation to face any eventualities of flooding and for the evacuation of flood victims including in high-risk areas, the government has set aside RM16.4 million this year," he told reporters after closing the East Zone management workshop here today.

About 120 officers from various agencies took part in the three-day workshop.

Also present were Kelantan acting police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun, Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf and Terengganu police chief Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa.

Meor Ismail said 320 boats, as well safety jackets, have been distributed in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.

Low-lying areas located along the major rivers in the East Coast states of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu are normally hit by yearly floods during this period.
