Toss it higher! Roti canai crowned 'world's best street food'

KUALA LUMPUR: Roti canai, the favourite staple of Malaysians, has been crowned as the 'best street food in the world', according to TasteAtlas.

The flatbread topped the chart of 50 street foods listed by the travel guide this month.

Another favourite local delicacy, pisang goreng (banana fritters) also made it to the list at the 42nd position, albeit being classified as Indonesian street food.

Ironically, the Indian version of roti canai - paratha - took the fifth spot while other Indian cuisines such as samosa and tosai were ranked at the 25th and 29th positions, respectively.

Taste Atlas released the rankings on its Facebook site last Wednesday that has since garnered mixed responses from foodies around the globe.

The travel guide, founded by journalist and entrepreneur Matija Babic in 2015, has catalogued over 10,000 foods and drinks around the world.
