43 houses razed in pre-dawn Kudat fire

KUDAT: Some 200 residents lost their homes after about 43 houses in Kampung Tanjung Kapur, here, were destroyed in a pre-dawn fire today.

However, there were no casualties reported in the incident which took place at 2.20am.

The fire was believed to have sparked at a house in the area before it spread to other homes.

It was understood that at the time of the incident, most of the residents were sleeping and failed to save their belongings.

A spokesman for the state Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 2.28am.

He said, 21 personnel along with three fire tenders from the Kudat and Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Stations (BBP) rushed to the incident site.

"The fire completely razed to the ground 43 non-permanent type houses in a ​​202 square metre area," said a spokesperson.

According to him, the fire was brought under control at 4.21am and was completely doused by 6.43am.

"No injuries and deaths were reported in the fire.

"The amount of losses and the cause of the fire are still under investigation," he said.

The Kampung Air Voluntary Fire Brigade (PBS) members and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) personnel were also involved in putting out the fire.
