Flash floods strike parts of Penang island last night

GEORGE TOWN: Continuous downpour since 10pm last night has resulted in flash floods in various parts of the island.

Among them were Jalan P. Ramlee, Kampung Masjid and Kampung Naran.

Tens of houses in the three areas were inundated.

At Kampung Masjid, the flood water rose to knee-level.

However, no evacuation centre has been opened.

State Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said Sungai Pinang also breached the danger level by 2.5m but did not overflow its banks.

He said the water level has since dropped from danger level to warning level.

"The situation is under control and all the pumps are working well.

"Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the situation," he said.

According to Phee, based on the reports he received, most of the affected houses were flooded between 30cm and 50cm of flood water.

"The elected representatives in the affected area have gone to the ground to monitor the situation and render the necessary assistance.

"As of 10am today, the flood water in most of the areas has receded," he added.
