Home Ministry may set up one-stop centre to expedite investigations

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is considering establishing a one-stop centre under the police to expedite investigations.

Caretaker Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the proposed centre will house other government agencies such as the Chemistry Department, Health Ministry, National Registration Department and Immigration Department.

"Sometimes, investigations are delayed due to inter-agency processes. A one-stop centre will not only help the police but also other enforcement agencies to ease the processes, hence expedite the investigations," he told a press conference after opening the 3rd National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE 2022) here today.

Present was Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan, who is also the NAFSLE 2022 advisor.

Hamzah said a thorough and detailed investigation was needed to find the guilt of the perpetrator.

As such, he said, a fully equipped forensic facility would aid in finding justice.

"The wrong can be swiftly brought to justice and the innocent can be spared from wrongful prosecution which will trigger social problems later on."

He also suggested local universities to establish forensic science courses to nurture talents who can help the country with the matter.

Meanwhile, he said the Ministry was also looking at giving special allowance to police forensic officers.

"In dramas and movies, forensic investigators are often the main heroes, but I know you are the true heroes.

"Solving a case may take days, these investigators sacrifice their family time. It's particularly hard for those who just started their own families, so I think it is time to introduce a special allowance," he said.

In preparation for the 15th General Election, he would request the usage of advanced devices to ensure national security during and after the election.

"I will discuss this with the IGP, we may have to prepare ample devices, including high-end ones, because during the election, many issues and accusations will be raised, and that may stir the rakyat's emotions.

"Of course, we do not want this to happen but we'll never know, so I want the police to be prepared for any possibility," he said.
