Year Five pupil feared drowned in Sungai Kemaman

KEMAMAN: An 11-year-old boy is feared drowned while his two friends escaped in an incident at the Kuala Kemaman river, near the Marina Beach, here, this afternoon.

District police chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said they received an incident report about 4.30pm and immediately despatched a team to the scene.

He said the victim, Muhammad Aiman Asyraf Saharulzaman, a fifth-year student at SK Chukai, was said to have gone to the river with his friends to take a dip.

It is understood that the victim from Taman Bukit Kuang Sejahtera, here, cycled to the scene of the incident with two other friends at 3pm.

"While swimming, the three children involved were said to have almost drowned because of a strong current following heavy rain," he said.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Hanyan said the two friends of the victim, Asyraf Mohd Saiful Azhar, 12, Wan Wafiuddin Wan Mohd Dzulkhairy, 9, students of SK Bukit Kuang, saved themselves while the victim disappeared.

He said the search and rescue operation was being carried out involving 50 personnel from the police, Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Force.
